Trying Bikram Yoga for the First Time!



This morning I went to Nob Hill Bikram Yoga for the first time! I had heard through some of my Cali friends that Bikram is good, especially if you wanna shed a few pounds. Bikram Yoga is different from regular yoga in that it’s f*cking hot! It’s 90 minutes of sweating your ass off…in the best way possible.

I figured, I have lived in California for three years and still haven’t jumped on the yoga bandwagon. I wanted to see what all the hype was about. I basically live in yoga pants anyway, so I decided to go at 6:00 a.m. with my boyfriend.

My boyfriend, Paul, is actually the one who suggested we go to yoga early in the morning. Paul is from the Bronx, NY and has a rugged mentality about him. I was a little shocked when he suggested 6:00 a.m. Especially since I rarely see him out of bed before noon on most days.

We had a minor set back when our 5:00 a.m. alarm didn’t go off. Luckily, he woke up at 5:30 a.m., so we rushed out the door. We arrived five minutes late, and I was stressed going in, I hate being late. As I have never done yoga before and I wasn’t sure where to go or what was going to happen. Once we got into it and settled, the time seemed to fly.

I felt welcomed, the instructor was so friendly, she did a great job of talking people through the poses, and if I was unsure, I could look at the people around me. Some of the people in the class were crazy flexible, and you could tell they have been practicing for years. Others were in the same boat as me and had to modify some of the poses. I thought I would stick out because I was a newbie. I realized nobody was paying any attention to me, especially since Paul decided to wear a speedo, which I thought was hilarious!

I’m not gonna lie, there were times where I wanted to walk out of the room. I didn’t think yoga was going to be such a workout. I figured it was just going to be some light stretches and more of a meditation type of thing. Oh no! I did some research, and in a 90-minute Bikram session, you burn between 500 – 700 calories, Yay! Not to mention, I felt really energized going into work, and my skin and pores feel fantastic.

I am really happy we tried it as a couple, and we have committed ourselves to going every day this week. I feel this change is so positive and good for not only my headspace but my relationship with Paul. Lately, we have been communicating our feeling a lot. I finally feel like we are both on the same page spiritually.
